It all started with a bike and a podcast

No, I'm serious. It really did.

Before we get into the story, let me introduce myself. My name is Jenny and I'm the founder of Sincerely Sunday. In late 2021 I found out I was going to be released from a work contract. This came as a surprise and I spent the next few weeks mulling over what I could have done differently. During this time I realized I wanted to start a business and control my own destiny.

I was riding my bike one day while listening to a podcast. There was a guest speaker on the podcast who said she taught herself how to make candles during the pandemic. Immediately, I thought “That sounds like FUN! I CAN DO THAT!”

The very next day, I bought a bunch of supplies and began testing things out. I ended up making a few candles as gifts for the holidays and fell in love with the process.

I spent the next few months teaching myself to make what I’d consider to be the perfect candle – harmless, clean, long-lasting, with a scent strong enough to fill my one bedroom apartment. To better understand the ‘industry’, I asked my friends what issues they had with burning candles and surprisingly, almost everyone said they felt bad throwing away old jars. They just didn't know what to do with them

A light bulb went off in my head and that’s when I knew I wanted to craft something that not only was environmentally friendly, but also gave my friends an easy (and fun) reason to reuse their old jars.

Three months later and probably more self-talks than needed, I finally decided to rip off the proverbial band-aid and turn my newfound hobby into a business. I had NO idea what I was doing but one thing was certain – for the first time in a very long time, I felt a sense of purpose and that alone, was reason enough for me to pursue this venture.
